Introduction

Basic Installation

The directory structure of the core S.E.R FAQ looks like the following:

Where:

• repairfaq is your top level S.E.R FAQ directory (it can have any name you wish).

  There are only two files required in the repairfaq directory: index.html (or index.htm) and serbanr.gif (default is USA version but if you are in a different country, feel free to customize it). The index file will also need to be modified with your contact information and acknowledgements.

• sam contains all of the files associated with Silicon Sam's Technology Resource (SSTR) and Sam's Laser FAQ (SLF). (Zip files: all-faqs.zip and laserfaq.zip.)

• laserpic contains all of the files associated with the Laser Equipment Gallery (LEG) (if present) or (more likely for most Web sites) an index page with links to active LEG Web sites.

• REPAIR contains all the files associated with the original S.E.R FAQ and contributions from others. (Zip file: REPAIR.zip.)

• whole contains the original large S.E.R FAQ files and associated graphics. (Zip file: whole.zip.)

• See Home and Mirror Site Locations to identify a site with a ZIPPED versions of SSTR (all-faqs.zip) and SLF (laserfaq.zip). These should be present and up to date on both the Drexel and UPenn Web sites. Zip files with the contents of REPAIR and whole are generally also present there as well. If not, you'll have to use wget or the "Save Web Page Complete" options in your browser to get the files.

• Uncompress the desired portions of the Zip files:
  • Extract all files: unzip filename
  • Extract selected files: unzip (or PKUNZIP) -x filename file1 file2 ...
  • Directory of all-faqs: unzip (or PKUNZIP) -v filename

  (Answer 'yes' or 'all' to any duplicate file queries if installing both SSTR and SLF in the same directory.)

• Your browser needs to be configured properly to make sense of the many ASCII diagrams, schematics, and tables. See the document: Suggested Browser Settings for font and other related information.

• If you are not planning to have some of the FAQs present locally, edit the appropriate menu(s) so the links will still work.

• The file "emaillnk.htm" contains a redirect to email links for the Sci.Electronics.Repair FAQ authors (Sam and Fil), as well as the general Feedback Form. Edit this file if the location of the email contacts page should change in the future.

I routinely test all of this on Unix (Sun OS/Solaris), Linux (Redhat), and Windows (Win98, WinME, Win2000, WinXP) using both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. Please let me know if there are any problems.

Icons and Links

• To create a link to S.E.R FAQ Main Menu from an existing Web page, use a text or HTML editor to add the following lines to it:

  This will add the S.E.R FAQ icon and create hot links to the S.E.R FAQ Main Table of Contents as long as it is in the same directory with an appearance similar to this:
  • S.E.R fAQ Main ToC - Comprehensive Repair Guides, FAQs, Testing Info, Assorted Schematics, etc.

  Edit as appropriate for your complete path if located elsewhere or to link to the S.E.R FAQ.

• If you are running Win95 or above (I don't know if this works for Win3.1x), the .ico format icon files can be used when accessing the FAQs from a folder or the desktop.

  To add a link from the Window desktop directly to the Silicon Sam's Technology Resource main menu, via Firefox or IR, surf over to your copy of "sammenu.htm" and press and hold the left mouse button while dragging the local "Main Menu" or its icon hot link to the desktop. Create a shortcut there and then edit its properties to use the icon of your choice! (You can do the same thing with any of the other hot links instead if you do not intend to maintain a local copy of these documents.)
