Formula used assumes linear lamp and damping factor of 0.8 Coil loading and cavity loading increase errosion, potential minute cracking, and reduce explosion limit. Inaddition non optimum circuit design will also reduce lifetime.

 

** Ko=1.27L/D   was used.   Others suggest:   Ko=1.27(P/450)0.2(L/D)

Ko appears to be calculated based on 450 torr although mfg indicated 300 torr was generally how the lamps are filled for easier firing. 

 

*** These lamps can be air fired but much lower average power is available. Water provides better optical coupliing efficiency, more damping of shock during firings, better insulation when properly deionized..  Additional expense, increased safety issues, increased maintenance, are the disadvantages to water cooling. Water reduces thermal loading on laser rod but increases thermal stress. Air firings can increase thermal stress due to thermal hot spots and rod should be given 30mins to cool between firings for improved rod lifetime. Laser rod surface cracking can occur with either method if thermal stress is exceeded.  

 

****  Peak current was calculated as 2 times Zo yet according to EG&G and other sources Zo+Rt is used instead where

EG&G provided formula:

Rt =0.065L/(D2)     L=arc length in inches. D bore of tube in cm.   Damping factor of 0.8 and pulse width at 1/3 max value is 100 usec to 1000usec.

The effect is overall lower peak current. But in the above electrical data given, all these values are just estimates and don't reflect actual electrical circuit performance.

Either electrical polarity okay with these SG lamps. Xenon Corp helicals are electrical polarity sensitive (true anode/cathode) and solder sealed end caps. SG are graded glass seal.

HELICAL LAMPS generally run around 400 to 600 USD  depending on vendor.
